It's Finally Acting Like Summer

We've had a long and glorious spring this year with much cooler than normal temps and low humidity, it really has been so beautiful outside!  Until this week when were hit all of the sudden with a whopper of our normal 98* with 98% humidity... I don't think anyone was really "ready" for it tho!  Steamy is about the right description... oof! Southern Maryland!

While I loved our long spring, I'm having a hard time getting my melons and squash to germinate in the garden.  Due to the cooler air temperature the soil temp hasn't quite reached the optimal warmth for most of those seeds to put up shoots.  I did  plant a few early squash varieties that are growing gangbusters so we'll have that if nothing else.  And the summer bugs are getting a late start along with the heat so I'm not gonna complain about that one bit.
Out in the garden the erratic cabbage looper moths have made their annual appearance and I started to see some chewed up cole crops so I decided it was time to harvest "the big bed" of kale before there wasn't any left for us.  I took out a 4x9 foot bed that came in at 40+ lbs!

The bulk of that kale is going into our Breville to make green juice for super macro nutrients.  I'll really miss gathering all my salad greens for dinner fresh from the garden! There's a little gleaning I can do in that bed before I turn it over and I do have a bit of Simpson lettuce and some crunchy greens that continue to thrive but won't give us that overflowing salad bowl.  I'll plan better next year!

We're also excited about the first Poultry Swap of the year! Erin hosts the June swap at her Green Hill Farm in Sharpsburg, MD.  We had to cancel both April and May swaps due to COVID but we're going forward with June!  The June swap will be split into back to back Saturdays to keep the crowds and vendor levels lower than normal.  So head up to Sharpsburg, MD on June 20th and/or June 27th.  We will be hosting our home market in Accokeek on the 21st so expect to see us at Green Hill Farm on the 27th!  All the details are on Erin's website at ghfarm.org.
