With darker meat and deeper flavor, our heritage turkeys offer a distinctive and rustic eating experience. The Naragansett turkey is from the oldest continuous stock of heritage turkeys, brought to America by colonists in the 1600's and were the market turkey of choice until nearly 1900. Unlike their modern cousins, they grow at a slower pace and they are not as large as the modern traditional table-bird but what they lack in size they make up for by yielding a naturally firm and moist meat with an full authentic turkey flavor... the entire turkey is dark meat, even the breast is darker. A true American heritage centerpiece on your holiday table.

Narragansett turkeys have a calm disposition, are good mothers, have excellent egg production, and excellent meat quality. The Narragansett turkey would make a useful and beautiful addition to the family farm. We focus on careful selection for good health, ability to mate naturally, and production attributes for superior birds.
The Narragansett turkey is named for Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island, where the variety was developed and descends from turkeys brought to America by English colonists in the 1600’s. Improved and standardized for production qualities, the Narragansett became the foundation of the turkey industry in New England until the Broad Breasted White was introduced and became what is now known as the "Butterball".

This is Spot. I adopted this Ancona girl last summer with Houdini Duck when she was about 3 months old. She's a very quiet duck, a bit shy, but still on the sweet side. She also throws just the most beautiful babies! Of all the duck eggs I set in the incubator this year, she and my Welsh Harlequin girl had the best hatch rate (85%!) when bred with Duck Dogers, my WH drake.
She has the cutest black and orange feet! Her eggs are white with a nice large oval shape, hard to tell from my Runners, Campbells and Harlequin.
The Ancona averages 6 to 6.5 pounds and is a bit stockier than its close relative, the Magpie duck. It's a hardy, adaptable, all-purpose duck and an excellent layer of about 210-280 white, cream, or blue eggs yearly. These ducks are well suited for situations where they can forage for some of their food and are capable of eating large "banana" slugs.
"They make excellent pond or yard ducks since they tend to stay close to home, do not fly under normal conditions and are large enough so that they are less likely to be preyed upon by winged predators. Typically they have moderately calm temperaments and make fine pets." (Holderread 2001, 52)
